The island of Light

According to an ancient myth the island of Rhodes originated from the blue water of the Aegean Sea. According to the myth, when the God of sun saw it, he fell in love with the island and demanded it from his father Zeus. Since then, the God of Sun gives Rhodes the gift of light many times throughout the year and one of the longest summers. Rhodes is the Capital city of the Dodecanese islands, gifted by nature and blessed by history. It is not difficult to understand why Rhodes is considered an ideal place for your vacation. The natural beauty of this island combines crystal clear waters, an abundance of crops and many mountains with the highest standing at 1.215m (Mt. Attaviros). The island includes a great number of beaches (rocky and sandy).Its clean coastline is ideal for swimming and water sports. The medieval town with its remarkable wall makes the capital of Rhodes unique and one of the most interesting towns in the world. The ‘Old town’ is located within a well preserved castle that was constructed in the Knights Era. This castle is one of the oldest samples of medieval architecture today. The impressive Knights Castle, the diverse medieval buildings, the churches, the museums, the old libraries and the archeological findings give the sense of another era. Historical information on Rhodes

The city of Rhodes was founded in 408 BC when the 3 main Dorian cities of the island, Lindos, Ialysos and Kamiros, were united in order to form the capital at the islands’ most northern point. The city was designed by the great ancient architect Hippodamus and was considered one of the most beautiful cities of the ancient world. By that time, the sculptor Charis erected the famous statue of Colossus, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Rhodes, being a great political and military force, dominated during the 3rd century BC and in 164 BC, it became a province of the Roman empire and met great economic prosperity.

Until the 1st century AD the island maintained its glory and was one of the most important centers for culture, sciences and art. From the 7th century AD, Rhodes was occupied by Persians, Arabs, Sarasins and Seljuk Turks.

In 1309 the Knights of St. John occupied the island after leaving Jerusalem. Many of the city’s historic monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during that era given they rebuilt the city into a model of the European medieval ideal. In 1522, Rhodes was conquered by Turks and was in their possession for nearly four centuries while in 1912 Italians ruled the island influencing enormously its architecture. In 1948 Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese islands were united with Greece.

If your card is lost or stolen, please inform reception immediately. On your departure day, please leave your room card at reception and make sure your personal belongings are not left unattended.
